Who are your favorite people to be around?
A common autistic trait is preferring few quality connections to having lots of surface level friendships. I definitely fit this stereotype and every friendship I have has deep meaning.
In my past I have just accepted someone who seemed interested in me, most likely as I tend not to get noticed. When times got hard I learned who my true friends are who patiently support me. When my health deteriorated, I lost my driving licence and job and learned how poor societal values can be; all that mattered to my family was if I could appeal the loss of my driving license. Choosing public safety over personal entitlement lost me family, and friends, all of which I’m grateful for as it cleared a path for me to make more meaningful connections.
When finding out who are true friends, it is when things are difficult that we can learn who we can count on, and the friendships worth nurturing.
